Nerd Alert podcast: Tubeless domination at Paris-Roubaix

This year’s Paris-Roubaix was all about tubeless tires and foam inserts — so much so that it’s easier to talk about who wasn’t on them than who was. But the best part of modern Paris-Roubaix tech? The fact that it’s all so normal.

The Nerds also bring on the owner of a small brick-and-mortar shop to talk about the state of retail in the bike industry, and then he joins us as a guest wrench on a super fun segment of Ask a Mechanic.

Nerd Alert podcast: More fun new stuff from Sea Otter, and the future of traveling with your bike

Caley promised to be more prepared for our second Sea Otter episode, but his list of neat new stuff that he found at the show was a little… questionable. Luckily for him, we had a special guest on hand: Orucase co-founder Isaac Howe.

Isaac gave us plenty of detail on the magical folding full-size travel case Orucase has in development, shared with us a bunch of tips on how to pack your bike for a trip, and described how he sees the future of traveling with your bike in general now that most of the US domestic carriers no longer charge oversized fees. TL;DR version: it’s time to go into weight weenie mode.

CyclingTips Podcast: What will the peloton face this weekend at Paris-Roubaix?

The CyclingTips podcast is back to preview the upcoming men’s and women’s Paris-Roubaix.

SD Worx is the team to watch after a disappointing performance in the first Paris-Roubaix Femmes, and although they’ve been the team to beat this Spring, has the men’s Jumbo-Visma team peaked too soon?

Plus, with his leg broken Ronan has become an expert in data analysis, apparently.

Nerd Alert podcast: What were the coolest things we saw at Sea Otter today?

The Sea Otter Classic trade show is back for 2022, and the Nerds are on site with a special episode, recorded right on the expo floor!

James, Dave, and Caley talk about the coolest things we saw at the show on day one — like lower-priced 3D-printed saddles and one seriously sweet garage door opener, of all things — and then we chat gravel tire trends with Vittoria’s VP of product development, Ken Avery.

Nerd Alert podcast: Inside the mind of mad scientist custom builder Rob English

Rob English is one of the most highly coveted builders of high-performance steel bikes these days, and he’s also an elite athlete in his own right. His distinctive function-over-form style is very much rooted in his engineering background, but much of his vision and creativity comes from his eclectic experience in folding bikes, tandems, recumbents, unicycles, and even HPVs.

What makes English tick, and where does he get his ideas from? How much skinnier does he think his seatstays can get, and what does he think of the UCI? It’s definitely an entertaining and enlightening conversation that you won’t want to miss.

From the Top: Building Ritchey

.rssTitle, .rssSubTitle, .rssContent, .rssBottomLinks {display: none;} img {max-width:100% !important; height: auto !important}

From the Top: Building Ritchey

Welcome to the first episode of 2022. I’m thrilled to bring to you a living legend of the sport, Tom Ritchey. Not only is Tom one of the founding fathers of mountain biking, but he’s also a master frame and component builder, innovator, and entrepreneur.

Researching this episode and trying to put a timeline together to extract the major business milestones that Tom has been through was a bit of a daunting task. There’s so much there. He’s been in business for 50 years and as modest a business as he’s intentionally kept it, it hasn’t always been a straightforward journey.

So much of Tom’s story has already been documented and I didn’t want to just do that again. In fact, I can’t do justice to telling Tom’s intertwined life and business journey in a podcast of any reasonable length. But as it turned out, what came out of Tom during our interview ended up being so much better. At this point in Tom’s life I found him incredibly reflective on his experiences, with the benefit of years of hindsight and perspective.

To find out more about Tom’s journey through Rwanda as referenced in the episode, you can read Land of Second Chances.

Thank you to Malcolm Bloedel for producing this episode and Ashley de Neef for composing the music.

Nerd Alert podcast: High-end aluminum bikes and dropper posts for everyone?

Things have been a little wacky in the road bike world lately, with Specialized launching a new Allez Sprint high-end aluminum race bike that’s both heavier and more expensive (but potentially better?) than the one it replaces, dropper seatposts in pro racing, and bikes that positively laugh in the fact of that 6.8 kg UCI weight limit (how about 3.3 kg instead?).

Plus, ever wonder what word sets off Zach? Yeah, we were a little surprised, too. Add in another round of Ask a Mechanic, and you’ve got the makings of yet another fantastic episode of Nerd Alert.

CyclingTips Podcast: A jam-packed week of Belgian Classics

This week on the CyclingTips podcast…

The Volta a Catalunya saw the young Colombian Sergio Higuita take a major general classification victory after the first three stages were dominated by Australians.

In Belgium, Brugge-De Panne was hectic and E3 signalled a changing of the guard while both the men’s and women’s Gent-Wevelgem ended dramatically.

Nerd Alert podcast: Confused about tubeless and tire pressures? You’re not alone.

.rssTitle, .rssSubTitle, .rssContent, .rssBottomLinks {display: none;} img {max-width:100% !important; height: auto !important}

Nerd Alert podcast: Confused about tubeless and tire pressures? You’re not alone.

This week’s Nerd Alert episode came about after consumer-direct wheel company Hunt released a 1,213 g ultralight disc brake road wheel with a hookless tubeless rim.

Where some of the other more prominent hookless road wheels have 23 to 25 mm internal widths to supposedly support the tyre at lower pressures, Hunt’s have a marginally narrower 21 mm figure. And with that, some readers raised questions through our Mailbag column over whether the recommended 72.5 psi maximum pressure actually makes sense for riders of average weight and on popular road tyre widths of 25 and 28 millimetres.

As a technical consultant to some winning WorldTour teams, Josh Poertner of Silca flicked us a message with some thoughts on the matter that only raised more questions. And that got us thinking, perhaps it was time to check-in again on where we’re at in the world of road tubeless, what’s new, what’s coming down the pipeline, and what still needs to be fixed.

Join Dave Rome, James Huang and Josh Poertner as they discuss all things from hookless road woes, tyre pressure calculators, and how tyre sealants work (or don’t) at road pressures.

Freewheeling Podcast: Trek-Segafredo had a plan at Trofeo Alfredo Binda

While Trek-Segafredo committed to their team plan at Trofeo Alfredo Binda, SD Worx struggled to come together as a unit. A lot of the top riders weren’t present over the weekend, but would that change if Binda was closer on the calendar to Strade Bianche? Speaking of the calendar, should there be a women’s Milano-San Remo?

Coming up we’ve got a lot of exciting racing in Belgium. Can Wiebes continue dominating the sprints or will Kopecky and others challenge the Dutchwoman?
