Bicycle rider hit and killed on North Portland Road

Police say it happened somewhere on this section of N Portland Road.

Just in from the Portland Police Bureau:

A cyclist has been hit and killed on North Portland Road.

On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at approximately 5:57 a.m., officers responded to reports of a crash on North Portland Road involving a cyclist and vehicle. When officers arrived, they found the cyclist and determined the individual was deceased. The cyclist appeared to be an adult male.

The driver of the involved vehicle, also an adult male, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crash Team responded to investigate the crash. North Portland Road is closed between North Marine Drive and North Columbia Boulevard.

This is the first bicycling fatality so far this year.

It’s unclear exactly where or how this happened. The section of N. Portland Road is two lanes, with one general lane in each direction. Bicycle riders usually do not ride on this road because there is no shoulder space or bike lane, and there’s a paved path directly adjacent to it. That path is part of a network of trails many people use to access Kelley Point Park, Smith & Bybee Lakes, and other popular destinations. There’s also a designated crossing of N. Portland Road that has a marked crosswalk, center median, and overhead caution signs (see photo above). Speeds of drivers are relatively high out there (speed limit is 45 mph), and the crossing can be very stressful. There’s excellent visibility in both directions, but with the high speeds, it can be hard to judge. I did the crossing in a video I shared last month.

We’ll have more details when we can. If anyone has more information, please get in touch.
