PARIS-ROUBAIX’21: Colbrelli Conquers the Cobbles!

Race Report: At the end of a wet and muddy Paris-Roubaix, Bahrain Victorious’ Sonny Colbrelli was the fastest in the sprint ahead of Gianni Vermeersch (Lotto Soudal) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix). A tough winner of a tough race. Sonny Colbrelli won an heroic edition of Paris-Roubaix. After more than 257 kilometres and many soaking wet cobblestones, he was the first to cross the finish line on the Roubaix cycling track after an exciting battle of three men. He beat Florian Vermeersch and Mathieu van der Poel.MapParis-Roubaix covers 257.7 kilometres, of which 55 kilometres are cobblestones spread over thirty cobblestone sections. There are 500 metres more cobbles than two years ago. The route also has one cobblestone section more this year. After a neutralised zone of 7.2 kilometres, the race can really start. After 96.3 kilometres, the Troisvilles-Inchy sector is the first cobblestones of the day. But unlike in 2019, this section of 2.2 kilometres will be run in its entirety. The route then leaves the Biastre section, after which 29, 28 and 27 follow each other in rapid succession. At Saint-Python the route heads north to the short cobbled section of Haussy to Saint-Martin-sur-caillon (26). The section from Vertain to Saint-Martin-sur-caillon will be done in the opposite direction, meaning the riders will have to climb. Then the course goes a little more east, over Capelle-Ruesnes (24). This section was discovered in 2005, but has not been included in the Paris-Roubaix route since 2016. After this, the riders still...

PARIS-ROUBAIX’21 BREAKDOWN: Mud Bath Madness!

Ten Takeaways from the Roubaix cobbles: Sunday brought us rain, mud and a stunning Paris-Roubaix. It wasn’t much fun for the peloton, but the couch warriors were in their element. Spencer Martin gives us his ‘Ten Takeaways’ from an historic ‘Hell of the North’.– This article is an excerpt from the Beyond the Peloton newsletter. Sign up here for full access. –Paris-Roubaix made us wait for over two years, but, in the end, the historic race over the brutal pave of the austere of Northern France, served up potentially the best one-day race of the season. European champion Sonny Colbrelli announced his arrival as a force in the toughest one-day races by winning a reduced sprint over Florian Vermeersch and Mathieu van der Poel in the famed Roubaix Velodrome. The win for Colbrelli in the Roubaix velodromeThe race, which had a running time of over six hours and was marked by cold, rainy weather, and took riders over the most difficult terrain the sport has to offer and was a true test of mettle. The hard racing and slick conditions on the cobblestones reduced the peloton to an extremely select group by the time they hit the critical Forest of Arenberg with 100km remaining and set in motion what was essentially the longest finale in the history of modern cycling. Colbrelli slipped off the front unchallenged a few kilometers later and was chased down by a vicious attack by Van der Poel shortly after. While it appeared that Gianni Moscon, the...

Keep on Sprinting Through Your Transition Period

Last week we discussed keeping sprint work during a transition period can help maintain fitness with little risk for mental fatigue. The same group just published another study looking at the same idea. What did they find?Winter training doesn’t have to be like thisAs we slowly approach the end of the competitive road season, many cyclists are considering an end-of-season transition period before starting up with their base training over the colder winter months. However, none of us want to forfeit our hard-earned fitness.Perhaps you have asked yourself before: What is the best way to maintain your fitness while still allowing your body to recover? In this weeks Toolbox article, we will investigate a recently published paper published from Brent Ronnestads research group. The researchers investigated the use of sprints during Low Intensity Training (LIT) sessions to increase cycling performance during a 3-week transition period following the competitive season. Lets get started!Who did they study?Eleven male cyclists completed the study. These athletes were certainly elite, with relative VO2max (maximal rate of oxygen uptake) values above 71 mL/kg/min.What did they do?At the start and end of the study, the cyclists completed a series of tests to identify the blood lactate threshold, VO2max, as well as 30 s sprint power and their 20 min power output, like a 20 min FTP test. By performing the tests before and after the intervention, the authors could then determine how changes in performance were affected by the training intervention. The exercise test protocol is outlined...

Norman Hill, Bernard Tapie and Heiko Salzwedel RIP

Obituary: Norman Hill, Bernard Tapie and Heiko Salzwedel were three very different men and were important to cycling in different ways. Ed Hood looks back at their lives through the words of people who knew them well.   In recent weeks weve lost three important figures within our King of Sports. Two youll have heard of and one name is perhaps not so familiar to you, albeit his words have graced our pages. That man was Norman Hill, never a big star but a man who did it all, road, the Belgian Kermis scene, track – including the six days, following the big motors, even cyclo-cross. We interviewed Norman a time or two.  Norman kept in touch and we always welcomed the views of a man who; had the T-shirt. We thought it would be nice to hear what people who knew him well had to say. Former US professional and six day man, Tim Mountford who partnered Norman in the six days said:“Sadly, the family of Norman Hill has informed me that Norman passed away on Friday morning, October 1, 2021, of heart failure at the age of 82 in their current home town of Vancouver, Canada. Norman was loved by many throughout Europe, England and North America; we all appreciated his ever-present smile and positive attitude. I met Norman in Rotterdam, Holland in 1971 where he then lived and was well known in the press for his bicycling racing achievements and popularity. Norman originally moved from England to Switzerland in...

Lombardia Race Preview: The final ‘Monument’ of the 2021 season is this Saturday in the north of Italy – Il Lombardia. It has been a long and exciting year, Ed Hood looks forward to the ‘Classica delle foglie morte’ as the curtain closes on the WorldTour.Cyclo-cross has already started and Eli Iserbyt is winningYes, its that time of the year again, Eli Iserbyt is already winning those big crosses, the Track Worlds arent far away and the six days. . . Well, I wish I knew what to tell you about the six days. . .2021 Il Lombardia promoBUT, I digress, the Classic of the Falling leaves’ is upon us. The Primavera is the longest and the one the Italian riders would kill to win; De Ronde is perhaps the most physical with all those positioning battles into the hellingen and the one the Belgian riders would kill for the win; Roubaix has reclaimed its title as the filthiest and most acrobatic unusual attributes for a Queen; Liege has arguably the toughest parcours but Lombardia is without doubt the most beautiful, the lakes and mountains of Lombardy are stunning, theres scenic beauty abounding, just a few cobbles but even those are nicely laid – and little mud, even on a wet edition.Il Lombardia route map and profileThe organisers endless tinkering with the percorso continues; the once crucial Madonna del Ghisallo ascent comes as the first of the days seven climbs totalling 4,500 metres of climbing over the 239 kilometres between...

Build Resilience and Thrive in Adversity

Prior to the pandemic, many of us may not have described ourselves as being resilient or have even thought about our own resilience, for that matter. Regardless of whether or not this character strength and its corresponding coping skills were on your radar before early 2020, its definitely on your mind now Or at least, it should be.Life in a maskPersonal, professional, and financial lives have been stressed, shaken, or completely screwed up by COVID-19, thanks to stay-at-home orders and physical distancing mandates.During average, ordinary days and times, when a healthy adult incurs a stressor, they can cope reflexively and effectively. In the face of frustrations at work or a conflict in a relationship, a trusted coping strategy can help us to shake it off or push through in order to solve problems. These strategies might include a long ride, dinner with friends, a hot bath, or even a good cry.But when stress stretches itself out across our work, family, and leisure, and days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, we all need more than a bike ride and a tear-jerking rom-com to cope. We need adaptive thinking and behaviors that can help us to persist. To maintain hope. To access our strengths in the face of long-term adversity. Some people out there (and reading here) were already struggling with anxiety, depression, or the effects of trauma before the pandemic amplified all the challenges of life but many others were not. Regardless of which category you fall into, you need...

PEZ Picks The Coolest Tour Stages Of All Time!

The Tour’s Coolest Stages: As the 2020 Tour de France is on its first rest day, the ‘PEZ Crew’ got to thinking of their coolest Tour stage memories. Here are the guy’s choices and, surprisingly, not for the sporting aspect of the stage, but more for the ‘other’ happenings on the day.Ed Hood – PEZ Grand Tour Supremo:The 1989 Tour is won.Spikey Frenchman Laurent Fignon has a buffer of 50 seconds on second-placed Greg Lemond of the USA with just a 24.5 kilometer time trial to ride. The affable American has won the Tour before, in 1986 but since then has been the victim of a hunting accident in 1987 which had left him chasing form for months on end. However, a strong ride in the closing time trial of the 1989 Giro gave him hope and he proved to be double Tour winner Fignons strongest adversary in a thrilling duel around France in the 89 Tour. But coming into the closing battle against the watch from Versailles into The City of Light it looked like it was going to be a formality for the svelte man they called, Le Professeur who frequented the classy intellectuals haunt, the Caf de Flore in Paris rather than the Mexican restaurants which Lemond favored. But as with all most things in life, everything wasnt how it looked on the surface.Fignon was suffering from saddle sores which were giving him so much pain that he couldnt sleep. And Lemond had a secret weapon on his...

Le TOUR’20: Ed’s First Rest Day Rant!

Tour Rest Day Round Up: As every year, Ed Hood is welded to the TV not to miss a pedal stroke of the Tour de France. Of course there is the massive disappointment of not be being ‘Roadside’ in 2020 (damn covid-19), but he is eagle-eyed as always for the ‘real’ story of each day. Take it away Ed…More podiums for Tadej PogaarStage One:Are you watching this? Its Vik on the end of the phone; So now we stop racing if it rains and we have to cut descents out of the parcours?A wet day isn’t NiceI understand his point, I grew up looking at pictures of Big Ted & Co. covered in snow riding through blizzards in the Tour of Belgium but as my Aussie friend and PR man for Mitchelton-Scott, John Trevorrow observed; “It was carnage on the roads around Nice. After months of dry conditions the rain fell and that meant there was a build-up of oil on the roads and it became ridiculously slippery. I have ridden on those roads and with the twists and turns and tight hairpins they are quite challenging in the dry, but in these conditions it was obviously a nightmare.”Pinot’s nightmare was just beginningIm not always in favour of rider protests like the one Cancellara lead a year or two ago but in this case it seemed sensible with guys hitting the deck all over the place and there was little doubt that it was going to end in a sprint.A...

It was the same at the finish in Loudenvielle, where there were many fans. As reported in WielerFlits: Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics, reacted: “This is not possible. This also hampers our races.”The Movistar team tweeted last night, calling on fans to wear face masks and to respect social distancing. “This restart of the season has taken so much effort. And we don’t want it to end prematurely.” Sven Nys also raised the problem. “As a rider and team, you will undergo tests every day, you will not be allowed to leave your hotel, you will have to make investments. PEZ Bookshelf: Mapping Le Tour!

Book Review: Some say to travel is better than to arrive but planning the trip can be more fun than anything else. Mapping le Tour by Ellis Bacon covers the journey taken from the first Tour to 2014 when the French race hit the roads of Yorkshire. As the 2020 Tour winds up the first week, Leslie Reissner takes a trip down Memory Lane and journeys the Tour de France routes of the past. For cycling enthusiasts one of the great joys of the sport/pastime is that if you love the Tour de France you can a) buy a bicycle similar to the one the pros use and b) go out and actually ride the same roads of la Grande Boucle that they do. And of course not just the roads of the next edition but pretty much all the roads since 1903. The Anjou Vlo Vintage event in 2013 included a section of the final stage of the 1903 Tour between Angers and Saumur, luckily making it only 90+ kms instead of the insane full 471 kms from Nantes to Paris of the original. But I thought then how nice it would be to have a book showing maps of each year’s Tour so that you might be able to put together your own ride into history. It turns out that in fact 2013 saw the publication of Mapping Le Tour: The Unofficial History of All 100 Tour de France Races by Ellis Bacon. This nicely-produced book is an excellent information...

A fine downhiller could then have the opportunity to make a difference on a descent of around ten kilometres to the finish.”Stage 8An early break was allowed to escape in the relatively flat run-up to the Col de Ment (6.9 km at 8.1%). How NTT’s Data Makes Watching LeTour Better

INTERVIEW: Ever wondered what those black sensors stuck under Tour de France riders’ saddles are for? They’re not just timing chips. They’re the sharp end of a partnership between the ASO and NTT – collecting over 150,000 points of in-race data per hour that’s transferred and transformed into the most advanced & enhanced race viewing experience we’ve ever seen – on television, mobile & desktop screens so fans can view anywhere there’s an internet connection. This year we saw more cool graphics, more rider and race data, speeds, power output, and even predictions on when the break will be caught and who will win. That’s all thanks to NTT (formerly Dimension Data) – a top global technology services provides who specializes in you guessed it – collecting, crunching and applying data.Click the video to watch the interview on the PEZ Youtube Channel, or scroll down to read the transcript. But how does it all work, and what further race viewing enhancements can we look forward to next year?
