Thousands of people on bikes support Black Lives Matter protest as march takes over I-84

(Photos: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland)

Thousands of Portlanders hopped on bikes last night to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Two rides coalesced and took over major streets and bridges before meeting up at the Rose City Justice/BLM march basecamp at Revolution Hall in southeast Portland. From there they joined a massive march that took over Interstate 84 and ended on inner Northeast Alberta Street.

It was a night full of people power and powerful symbolism: We marched together, united, on a freeway that destroyed neighborhoods and continues to divide our community and we chanted “Black Lives Matter” with fists raised high in the air on Alberta Street where gentrification has exacted a huge toll on Black lives.

Exogenous Ketones in Pro Cycling: The Future of Elite Endurance Sport?

And just like that, the use of ketones in Pro cycling made the headlines again after Tom Dumoulin announced he was quitting the Movement for Credible Cycling (MPCC), mainly due to MPCC’s objection regarding the use of ketones, since Jumbo-Visma have been open in acknowledging their use. But do ketones actually improve performance? A timely new research provides some novel insights.

Tom Dumoulin: “They (MPCC) came up with the story of how dangerous the use of ketones is. I thought that was a very hypocritical attitude. In addition, our team uses ketones, so it is a bit hypocritical for me to be a member of the MPCC.”

For all those interested, I’ve dedicated one episode of Fuel The Pedal Podcast to this topic with Dr. Mark Evans, who’s dedicated his PhD research to the effects of exogenous ketones in exercise physiology. You can listen it here:

Bike and walk advocates join calls for major police reform

“Our business has historically been in trying to build the best bike network possible, but our work is meaningless if public space is not safe for everyone.”
— Bike Loud PDX co-chairs

A storm of daily protests inspired by the murder of George Floyd have ratcheted up pressure for major changes at the Portland Police Bureau. And some local transportation reform advocates refuse to sit on the sidelines.

From fare enforcement on TriMet to enforcing traffic laws (or not), police officers have a vast impact on how people get around — especially people of color. Put simply: Transportation reform cannot happen without police reform and the dismantling of racist law enforcement.

That’s why Bike Loud PDX and Oregon Walks support a call for major systemic changes to the police budget being led by the Portland African American Leadership Forum (PAALF) and Unite Oregon.

Riding Alone Together

When you have been riding for a while, the routine of getting dressed is part of the metronomic rhythm of your experience. First, the chamois, the jersey, cap, helmet, gloves, shoes…and now the neck gaitor. Our newest consideration as we don our kit to ride into the hills, onto the gravel, into our community, and out on the open road.

The Gaitor: our protective attempt against the spread of CoVid-19, which has been going on for 3 months. It has been terrifying and lonely… and also considered the uniquely momentous “Great Pause” of our lifetime. A time to reconsider our lives, families, health and livelihoods.

Some of us were asked not to leave our houses for weeks and months, others lost friends and family members. But throughout all of this uncertainty we have been given the opportunity to focus on the things that are clearly the most important in our lives. To determine the people and the things which truly are our sanity makers, the places and environments that act as our sanctuaries.

Four rides to support Black lives

A family at last night’s march in northeast.
(Photo: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland)

If you’ve been to one of the protests in Portland you’ve seen that the number of people on bikes is growing each night. Now community leaders have planned several bike rides that will amplify and/or spin-off the protests.

After being all but shut down due to the pandemic, rides and events are once again being posted to the BikePortland Calendar. In particular there are five on the horizon (so far) I want to make sure you’re aware of. Before making plans, please remember that the deadly Covid-19 virus is still spreading in Oregon. Wear your mask, wash your hands, keep a distance if you can, and continue to take precautions.

Tonight (Monday, 6/8)

There are two bike meet-ups and rides tonight.

ALÉ Bikewear Green Road Kit Review: Recycled Materials Make Brand New Jersey & Bibshorts

Tucked within a few square miles of Castel D’Ario Italy are arguably the most skilled hands in performance apparel manufacturing. You’ll find several of the brands you would commonly recognize bases here, including Alé Bikewear’s production facilities and HQ.

Alé have become a staple in cycling kit over the past few years, and unlike many brands in the sport, Alé are actually manufacturing product. Typically though, most of these products require the base fabrics to be milled from newly manufactured raw materials. Alé decided to go another, more earth-friendly way with the latest Bibs and Jersey, the new PRR Green.

The jersey is an eco-friendly 90% recycled materials.

The front panel is a weave that is 80% Polyester-Recycled / 20% elastane.

EUROTRASH News Round Up Monday!

The new UCI calendar seems to be taking shape and we might see the Strade Bianche on the first of August – Top Story. Race news from the Giro, Vuelta, Poitou-Charantes, Ladies Tour of Norway and a different problem for Paris-Roubaix. The riders have a lot to say: Evenepoel, Ulissi, Groenewegen, Keukeleire, Kristoff, Van Aert, Bouhanni, Lopez, Dumoulin, Quintana, Betancur and Bernal. The Colombians fly in, Jakobsen talks sprinters, teams for the Ventoux Challenge, Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec to focus on Italian races, Lefevere funds team, transfer news, doping in Iran, Riis not co-owner of the NTT team and Bruyneel doesn’t need to see the Armstrong documentary. Loads to read, coffee time?

TOP STORY: RCS meet Italian government, optimism about Strade Bianche
Organiser RCS Sport will be meeting this week with the Italian Ministry of the Interior to discuss the restarting of cycling. RCS’s Stefano Allocchio told Lello Ferrara 3.0 on social media.

It seems certain that the Strade Bianche will be run on August 1. “We can confirm that the season will start with Strade Bianche,” said Allocchio. “I’ll go back to the office on Thursday. There will be a lot to do because we have been missed for a long time.”

The meeting with the minister and the chief of police will take place in Rome. “We’ll be at the Ministry of the Interior in a few days. We will then find out what the conditions are that are imposed on us for the execution of the races.”

Top British Winner ‘Super Sid’ Barras

Ex Rider Interview: At one time there was a strong home professional scene in Britain and up to the early 90’s there was a full calendar for the ‘paid class’ riders. But due to the blurring of lines between the pros and the amateurs, plus the disinterest (opposition) of the British Cycling Federation at the time; professional cycling disappeared. One of the top winners was ‘Super Sid’ Barras, there are not many riders out there with such a full palmarès.

Another win with Viking

‘Super Sid’ was what they called him; his tarmac graffiti artist fans used to paint; “screw ‘em Sid !’ on any suitable stretch of road surface. Sidney Barras was his Sunday name and few people have won more bike races than this man. British professional legend, Sid Barras talks about his amateur days, his motivation for turning pro, his strained relationship with Peter Post at Raleigh, his win in the Scottish Milk Race and that day at Eastway when he out-sprinted the great Eddy Merckx to take second place in the Glenryck Cup behind Didi Thurau. We also discuss the race he was favourite for every year for a decade but which it took him 10 years to win, the British Professional Road Race Championship. Sid was a fixture on the British professional scene for 18 years from 1970 onwards, it was high time we caught up with him.

PEZ Talk: Speed Skating Cyclist Mia Manganello Kilburg

Rider Interview: We are not really sure if Mia Manganello Kilburg is a ‘Speed Skating Cyclist’ or a ‘Cycling Speed Skater’ but whichever, it was about time Ed Hood caught up with her to fund out about her Olympic aspirations.

It was back in August 2017 we last spoke to Mia Manganello Kilburg; she was about to put her cycling career on hold and concentrate on her first love of speed skating with a view to making the Winter Olympic Games in China. Her agent, ex-pro Mike Englemann thought we might like to catch up with her as she takes up where she left off with her cycling career, riding for UCi squad DNA Pro Cycling.

PEZ: The Winter Olympics, PyeongChang, did you make it and how did it go?
Mia Manganello Kilburg: I was extremely honored to have made my first Olympic Team in 2018. I qualified in three events, the 1500m, Mass Start and Team Pursuit. The first event for me at the games was the 1500m. Unfortunately I was ill going into this race so I just did my best, which is all I was looking to do anyways; a medal was not in sights for me in that event. Next was the Team Pursuit. This was going to be the first time the three of us, Brittany Bowe, Heather Bergsma and myself, would be racing with one another. We knew we were capable of a lot but still not sure what to expect. After three rounds and the help of our fourth teammate Carlijn Schoutens, we were able to earn the bronze medal. This was the first medal for USA Long Track Speed Skating since 2010 and the first one for the US women since 2002.

I ended my first Olympics with probably the most fun of races, the Mass Start. I was racing this along with my teammate again, Heather Bergsma. The race was going just as we hoped. We sat in the back and waited for the right moment for me to go to the front and lead Heather out for the medal. After pulling off with one to go, much like bike racing, ‘you know what’ happens and Heather wasn’t able to cross the line top three. I have no regrets or disappointments from my first Olympics. To become an Olympian was the dream then to walk away with a medal was a very delicious cherry on top.

Catching Up with UAE’s Tadej Pogačar

Rider Interview: We spoke to the young prodigy Tadej Pogačar at the UAE Team Emirates training camp back in January – Since then a lot has happened. The overall win in Valencia and second in the UAE Tour and… COVID-19. Ed Hood caught up with Tadej in Slovenian lock down.

A big future to think about for Tadej Pogačar

He’s the man I said that despite his prodigious talent would fade in the final week of the 2019 Vuelta due to his tender years. Tadej Pogačar (UAE-Team Emirates and Slovenia) went on to win the Stages 13 and 20, was best young rider, second on points, third on GC and fourth in the king of the mountains in the Tour of Spain. Ed got that one wrong!

And in 2020 before Señor Coronavirus popped his head up, the 21 year-old Slovenian won two stages and the GC in Valenciana then a stage and was second on GC in the UAE Tour. His UAE team know a good thing when they see one and he’s on their books until at least the end of 2024. We caught up with Tadej during ‘lock down’ for a chat.

EUROTRASH News Round Up Thursday!

We live in difficult times, the COVID-19 pandemic and now race riots. USA Cycling joins the debate on racism – Top Story. The Tour/Giro/Vuelta are still in the balance, as is the rest of the season. Lots of rider, race and team news. Stuybar races in Czech Republic, Germany has its first race and Deceuninck – Quick-Step have a training camp. ‘New Normal’ on the way? And Het Laatste Nieuws summarises the ESPN Lance Armstrong documentary.

TOP STORY: USA Cycling Joins Debate on Racism
The American cycling federation, USA Cycling, has taken part in the international discussion that is currently being held about racism. The federation puts its hand in its own chest. “As a forerunner in the American cycling community, we admit that we were part of the problem of inequality and representation in our sport,” writes USA Cycling.

“No conversation can change the past. We have to use our position in society to embrace each other, stand up and ride together with the black community of our cycling family,” the union said on social media. “We must ensure equality, equity, transparency and dignity.”

“Being able to cycle is a privilege to safely discover the cities and paths in our country. We pride ourselves on being ambassadors for that. USA Cycling will make its voice heard as a national sports federation, in a sport that continues to grow with integration and that is committed to stimulating necessary change.”

Retailers deal with looting in aftermath of George Floyd protests

LOS ANGELES (BRAIN) — Some bicycle shops nationwide suffered theft and damage over the weekend in the wake of the George Floyd protests that flared into riots in some cities.

One retailer, Jay Wolff, who owns five shops in the greater L.A. area, lost about 40% of his overall inventory over the weekend from the I. Martin Bicycles location on Beverly Boulevard.

"Most of the stores were hit around I. Martin," Wolff said. "There wasn't a store that really wasn't touched. And the graffiti ... It's horrible. It looks like a war zone."

I. Martin suffered "north" of $130,000 in inventory loss, including several e-mountain bikes ranging in price from $10,000-$12,000. "Obviously, inventory was a little low because we've been partially open because of COVID and staffing," he said. "They were taking anything they could get their hands on."

Wolff said there were thousands of protesters along a mile stretch of Beverly Boulevard. The store has roll-down gates but some don't go all the way down and were vulnerable to entry. He said one of the front doors was broken before he and others boarded it and left for his Helen's Cycles Santa Monica, California, location.

Freewheeling Podcast: Katie Hall’s Everesting and getting to know Jose Been

We have another excitingly packed episode for you all today. We kick off with Loren and Abby discussing the breaking news of Lorena Wiebes leaving Parkhotel Valkenburg and signing for Team Sunweb. This episode possibly includes the most women’s cycling news we’ve seen since January, with announcements by Anna van der Breggen and Chantal Blaak that they will hang up their race bikes in 2022 in exchange for the driver’s seat of team directors for SD Worx, a virtual Skoda V-Series 3 day women’s race to replace the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, and the possibility of a brand new team on the horizon.

A very special guest joins Abby for this week’s episode of Freewheeling. Abby starts off by getting to know Jose Been before they chat about Jose’s most recent CyclingTips article about her quarantine experience and finding a way to wind down while getting fit on the bike and discovering more beauty on her home roads.

As a special bonus, Abby chats with podcast regular (and favorite) Katie Hall about her Everesting world record and how she is spending life with no bike racing.

To make sure you never miss an episode, subscribe to Freewheeling on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

A Message From Velo Orange

We stand in solidarity with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Our country is fractured by systemic racism and social injustices that have been ingrained in so many parts of our society and for so long. We will not and cannot sit on the sidelines and ignore those who are in need - that's part of the problem. We are calling on other companies and anyone who has a platform to help raise further awareness and funds for BIPOC organizations. Velo Orange will be donating to each of these organizations and fundraisers, and we encourage anyone who can (even a few dollars) to donate as well.

Retailers attempt to balance safety of customers, staff when reopening shops

'My staff's health and my customer's safety isn't worth someone's money.'

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BRAIN) — With careful consideration of staff and customer health, many bike retailers are wrestling with the safe way to reopen to foot traffic after shelter-in-place orders lift in the wake of COVID-19.

"We're erring on the side of caution as we have a 15-month-old staying with us as his daycare has closed; one employee's mom just had brain surgery and her immune system is compromised; my dad is in his 80s; and at age 63 in our state, I have an 8% chance of dying if I become infected with this virus," said James Moore of Moore's Bike Shop.

He considered opening a small section of his store to customers to create a "boutique look."

"That area has its own outside entrance as it once was a separate business and has its own AC system, so air there will not mix with air in our main showroom area where we're also doing assemblies and repairs," said Moore, who in recent months has conducted all business in the parking lot with a weather-proof service writing area.

Despite that well-thought-out plan, Moore won't reopen for foot traffic any time soon, citing the steady COVID-19 death rates in Mississippi.

Mega List of Project Updates!

by Igor

I first wanted to start off with a huge thank you to all of our customers, readers, suppliers, and staff for your support during these strange times.

Velo Orange is a strong company, and in the midst of challenging times like these, we're adapting and moving forward. We wanted to share some of the moves we're making that we're proud of, and look forward to coming to fruition.

Polyvalents

We've designed, tested, prototyped, and have sent the next generation Polyvalents into production. And let me tell you - they are a blast! We're offering two frame styles: "Low-Kicker" and "Diamond."

The first production run is going to be in the "Low-Kicker" configuration. In addition to being able to get on and off the saddle easily at stoplights, this low-slung top tube setup is a great option for lots of different riders. Fully loaded tourists will find it significantly easier to mount and dismount. Riders with limited flexibility will be able to ride a seriously capable and fun bike without compromising performance. Lastly, riders down to 5' will be able to have a very comfortable position with both drop and flat bars.

We'll also be offering a diamond-frame option for those after a more traditional look. These are just going into testing, but here is a raw frame picture.

Both will be in this absolutely stunning Metallic Sage paint. These should be available around October. We'll be opening up a pre-sale soon with more info, geometry, and close-ups, so stay tuned.

Pass Hunters

We've just gotten the final prototypes of the Pass Hunters and they are sooooo good. I'm super excited to be offering the (in my opinion) perfect "Sport Touring Bike."

The first Pass Hunter design called for the smaller sizes to be built around a 26x45mm tire size, but in the time of prototyping and testing the first iteration, this tire size is simply no longer common or available. We even talked to a number of rim and tire manufacturers who were discontinuing performance-oriented 26" rims and tires. Bummer. No worries, we've re-designed the framesets to accommodate 650bx47mm or 700x32mm tires and fenders across the board.

They've already passed testing and are going into production shortly, once we've ok'd everything on our end. They'll be available in both Brick Red and Sky Blue. We'll be doing a pre-sale for these as well.

Hubs

And for these thru-axle frames, new hubs are in production! This new rear hub shell is a custom design with a ratchet housing based off the classic, smooth-lined Record (my favorite). The design will retain our tool-free disassembly and maintenance and will include QR end caps for those who are using QR disc hubs. We'll have rim brake hub options, too.

Noir Flat Pack Rack

Since we got the Flat Pack Rack in, we've had a ton of interest in a Noir-ified version, alas stainless steel cannot be anodized or reliably powdercoated. But! A sample just arrived of a powdercoated chromoly steel version and I quickly mounted it on my Pass Hunter. It's just as strong, weighs the same, and is as easily adjusted. These will go into production soon.

Lucky Bars

What's one better than lucky #7? Lucky #8 of course! They have 8cm of rise, 800mm of width, and 8 degrees of sweep.

These are still in the prototyping phase, but they are fun!

Doover Saddle/Handlebar Bag

Another addition to the Velo Orange X Road Runner Bags luggage collaboration! The Doover, meaning thingamabob/thingamajig, is perfect for mounting at the front as a handlebar bag or on your saddle! In both cases, it can be used with or without a supporting rack. It is waterproof, cavernous, uses a roll top closure, and includes side webbing to use our existing Cell Phone and Snapper Sack accessory pockets. We're still testing them, but here's a picture.

Piolets

We're getting more Piolets in Fall, and in a new color. We'll reveal the color when we decide what it will be =)

Wheels

We're getting more 650b and 20" mini-velo wheels within the next few weeks. Thanks for your patience.

Two Container Arrivals

We're expecting two container arrivals: one in June and one in July. Both will have parts and accessories that you have been waiting on. The first of which will include Klunker Bars, Quill Stems, Granola Bars, Curvy Bars, Wheel Stabilizers, Copenhagen Kickstands, Noir Sabot Pedals, Happy Stems, and Voyager Rims.

The next one will have Crazy BarsRemovable Faceplate Quill Stems, and some other miscellanea that didn't fit in the first container.

Be sure to sign up for automated product alerts for the respective products you've asked about. Most of these items are extremely popular and go out the door fast.

We're also expecting a shipment of Blue Lug handlebars and Brass pieces to arrive within the next two weeks.

International Orders

We've had a few overseas folks say that their packages have been stuck in Jamaica Plains, NY or other USPS hubs. The issue is that USPS doesn't own their own planes, so they ship packages on passenger airplanes or contract through carriers like FedEx. Well, people aren't flying nearly as much anymore, so these hubs are getting severely backed up.

We have started shipping most international orders through FedEx to prevent delays in getting products to you. Depending on what's in your order and where you are, we may have to invoice you because of these increases in shipping costs, in which case we will email you first.

So that about wraps up all of the new and exciting things coming out of VO HQ right now. All of these new projects have kept us enthusiastic and engaged in an otherwise trying time. Thanks again, stay safe, comment if you have something on your mind, and as always - Happy Riding!
